The Exception and the Rule
Pictures taken during rehearsal
March-May 2006
by Bertolt Brecht
Directed by Angela George
One of Brecht's 'teaching-pieces' (Lehrstücke),
this play tells the simple but powerful tale of a journey across the uninhabited
Mongolian desert by a Merchant, his Guide and his Coolie. It sharply and
satirically demonstrates that a man can justifiably get away with murder, citing
self-defence if he can reasonably show his victim may have had a grudge
against him. The production was performed with members of the cast contributing
original live accompaniment on an eclectic variety of exotic musical
instruments, and was much praised by the Adjudicators of both the Port Sunlight
and CCTA Festivals for its style, imagination and energy while still bringing
Brecht's stinging moral deftly up to date.
